Report on SRP Annual Meet at Patna Science College on 4-6th  June 2011

Dr Amarendra Narayan and Dr Rakesk K Singh were the local coordinators. Arrangement for stay for all outstation participants was made in FARADAY HOSTEL of Patna Science College. This hostel is supposedly allotted to only the top performers of Patna Science College. The ambient atmosphere is very inspiring and homely and our interaction with few students who were present (summer vacations were on) was very positive. However, the sanitary cleanliness and Mess facilities were not very good.  It was a good experience to know about the conditions in which brilliant students of a premier academic institution live and pursue their carrier.

 

The Inaugural session of the SRP Meet was held in the Physics Department of Patna Science College. One of our SRPs,  Dr R K Mitra from Lucknow had lost her mother on 9th May 2011. All SRPs observed a 2 minute silence and prayed for the peace of the departed soul. 

 

Most of the academic programmes were held in Patna Science College premises. They included Annual Report by all SRPs as oral presentation, Discussion of future activities, Introduction of ther website www.utsahiphysics.com , Management issues and policy making,  and so on. Some of the Late evening discussions were also held at the Hostel.

 

The data on the work done by SRPs could not be compiled  to get the total volume of work and its impact in the year.

 

The Head of the Department Dr Anil K Verma invited all SRPs for a high tea at his residence where he also listened to our work and expressed his whole hearted  support in this noble activity.

 

Dr Jai Kumar, National convener of Vijnan  Bharati, attended the first inaugural session and was very happy to see that UPT team is doing such an important work at ground level.

 

Earlier on 3rd June, Anveshika Patna, Physics Department of Patna Science College and Vijnan Bharati organized a  day long Workshop on Indian Science and Contribution of Prof S Chandrasekhar. Many of the SRPs including Prof H C Verma participated in the workshop.

 

 

 

 

Decisions

 

The following decisions were made.

 

1.   For one-day workshops (Introductory Interaction Programme)  a standard package of experiments should be  developed. All SRPs should be well conversant with the theory of these experiments and they should initiate theoretical discussions after showing the experiments.

            A list of experiments was suggested for this purpose, given in encl 1.

2.   Documentation of experiments should be undertaken.

3.   Funds should be generated for Shiksha Sopan with a separate internal accounting. One source could be printing of small booklets by Shiksha Sopan in which UPT members contribute. The funds so generated  should be used for SRP workshops, research exposure meet etc if required.

4.   Dr Rakesh K Singh will arrange for Research Exposure Meet. Suggested institutions were BHU, NPL, IISc, PRL.

5.   The following minimum is expected  from SRPs in a year. (a) A programme to 50 teachers and 200 students. The break up can vary with 4 students equivalent to 1 teacher. (b) Development of 2 new experiments. It can be adopted from known sources but, should not be a popular one which many of the SRPs will already be knowing. If an SRP is not active for two successive years he/she may be allowed to quit the group.

6.   The following teachers were inducted in SRP team : Sh Vinayak Katdare, Ms Smita Fangaria and Sh Amit K Bajpai.

7.   Sh Avaneesh Kumar Upadhyay from  Mathura has not been active for quite some time, he has been encouraged to actively work for physics education beyond his classroom this year  to remain in Utsahi Physics Teachers group. Similar is the case with Sh Sanjiv Kumar of Kanpur.

 

Sh Sanjiv Kumar of Bhagalpur and Ms Vineeta Kumari had not been active for more than two years, may be due to personal commitments. They are allowed to quit the group. We hope to get them back when they are back in  action.

8. Dr Amit K Jana is given responsibility to look into national & International workshop/events/conferences on science teaching methodology & upload the information to all SRP's.

9. SRPs should try to include chemistry orientation in their programmes to honor International year of Chemistry.

10. A format should be loaded on UPT website for report and profile and SRPs should  upload reports of their programmes and their  profiles in these formats.

11. Possible venues for 2012 SRP meet were suggested as (a) Kolkata (Dr Jana), (b) Vrindawan (Dr RKA/ Dr A Yadav) (c) Bhopal (VB, HCV)

 


 

Other Guidelines/Discussions

 

The following general guidelines were suggested.

 

The group felt that our main  idea is to reinforce class room teaching. So about 60-70% of our effort should be in this direction.

 

The quality of our discussion is very important when we address the teachers or students. Details of Physics in each experiment, discussions, documentation (Hard copy, Soft Copy, Booklet, Leaflet etc.) should be given importance.

 

All SRPs  should search for enthusiastic teachers in each workshop and follow up interactions be made with them.

 

An article/document/write up be prepared on HOW EXPERIMENTALISTS/SCIENTISTS  THINK WHEN THEY DICOVERE NEW THINGS. It was a suggestion from Dr Amrendra Narayan and the group gave him the responsibility to work on this document.

 

Offer for Vigyan Bharati to collaborate was discussed. It was felt that the collaboration can work out, as long as, our basic theme of improving classroom Physics teaching is not compromised.

 

The following venue options were suggested for next  SRP meet-  (a) Calcutta (Amit Jana) (b) Vrindavan (Dr. R.K. Awasthi and AK Yadav (c) Bhopal (Vigyan Bharti, Professor HC Verma) 2012.
