Introductory Interaction Programs (IIP)

To give the first introduction of the Physics teaching methods using simple Physics experiments developed by us, I conduct 7-hours workshops with a group of Physics teachers. The optimum number of teachers is 30-60 though I have conducted workshops for more than 100 teachers also.

In the first session I emphasize the need to go for experiment-based classroom teaching and prepare the teachers mentally to change their existing chalk and talk techniques.

In the next phase I demonstrate a sample of about 20 to 25 Physics experiments at various levels (class 6 to class 12). With each demonstrative experiment, I explain when it can be used and what Physics can be explained using that particular experiment. I normally take 3 hours to show and discuss these experiments.

The last session is question and answer session where teachers ask various questions on Physics and we discuss in the group.

The whole workshop takes about 6 to 7 hours with a lunch break and one tea break.

How to arrange IIP?

Any group involved in Science education in school can organize an IIP anywhere in India. The organizer will have to arrange the following:

  • Venue, Seating arrangement for the participants, preferably in two columns with about 3 feet space in between.
  • Two tables on which experiments will be performed.
  •  Electric power close to the working table, two 5A sockets will be sufficient.
  •  Multimedia projector for the introductory lecture.
  • If the number of participants exceeds 75, a video camera for direct projection from the table to the screen is desirable.
  • Selection of teachers of the locality and inviting them. Arrangement of transport for the participant to the venue and back if needed.
  • Arrangement for LUNCH and TEA for the participants and others involved in the workshop.
  • Some articles like a plastic bucket, a mug, an electric heater to boil water etc.
  •  Tickets to two resource persons and their local hospitality. There are no Fee for the resource persons but a suitable donation to the NGO Shiksha Sopan is expected as the equipments are all assembled by village children associated with this NGO.

Sample Invitation and Registration forms can be used for inviting the teachers.

In no case IIP should be used by the organizers to make monetary profit.

In some cases a 2-day IIP workshop can also be arranged if teachers are coming from far away places and organizers arrange for their overnight stay. In that case, participants are given hands on practice with some of the activities/ are led to make some models in addition to the above items.

In general, organizers charge no registration fee or only the fee that is actually required to meet the expenses.
